LOOPED WALKS IN STROKESTOWN

Strokestown walking trails
The main loop runs clockwise within Strokestown Demesne and on to the town streets. This gives an easy grade walk of approximately 3.5 kilometres. Walkers can take their time at points of interest, this is likely to take about 60 to 90 minutes.

There is an optional loop at the western end if you break off at St. John's Church (County Roscommon Heritage & Genealogy centre). This runs anti-clockwise on footpath and quiet roads, taking in the Workhouse Graveyard in Cloonslanor. The loop is approximately 2 kilometres in length, taking about 30 to 45 minutes to walk at your leisure.

The trails are way-marked and plaques draw attention to points of interest. The looped walk in particular features an information board with fantastic detail relating to the history of a famine age workhouse.

NATIONAL FAMINE WAY (CAMINO)

National Famine Way
The National Famine Way is a digitally and physically waymarked 167km walking trail that connects the National Famine Museum in Strokestown Park, Co. Roscommon, with Rowan Gillespie’s Famine memorial on Custom House Quay in Dublin along the banks of the Royal Canal. It allows walkers to follow in the footsteps of the 1,490 tenants who were forced to emigrate from Strokestown to Canada on some of the worst of the coffin ships during the summer of 1847.
