amazing local fundraising

25/3/2021

Joe Murphy
When Strokestown postman and local county councillor Joe Murphy saw the plans for the new palliative care facility currently being constructed in Roscommon town by Mayo Roscommon Hospice, he decided to come up with a fundraising idea to help support it.

When Joe put on his ‘An Post cap’ on he came up the novel idea of parking up his post-van for the day and taking out the bike to ‘Hop on for Hospice’ and cycle his rural Post run (approximately 80km) while delivering his letters.

Joe said: “Many of our lives are touched by illness, and I wanted to do my small bit to ensure that patients and their families are given every support possible at the most difficult time”.

The Hospice Palliative care facility is currently on target to be completed this summer. The facility will provide day care, community care and an eight-bed in-patient unit, providing respite and end of life services.

As Joe’s fundraiser comes to a close, he would like to take the opportunity to thank people and remind everyone that donations can still be made to hospice.ie.
“I would like to thank my manager Peter Hanley for his assistance, and my colleagues in An Post Roscommon who helped make this happen by delivering flyers and collecting donations,” he said, “Not to mention their own generous contributions, including donating an Internal An Post Prize they received for ‘Values In Practice’ of €930. One of my colleagues, Tommy, even made me breakfast on the day!

“I would also like to thank Angelina Nugent and Martina Jennings from Mayo Roscommon Hospice for their assistance and support throughout the fundraiser. Their untiring dedication to this cause is truly inspirational.

“Thank you to Fiona and Emmet in Keen Print for the great flyers. To all the people far and wide who made such generous donations to the fundraiser and their lovely notes of encouragement, I sincerely thank you.

“To the people who cycled alongside me at different stages throughout the day – Brendan Collins, Kay Mole, Frank Costello and Adrian Coyle – thank you, you helped me to keep going! And finally to my family –Nicola, Conor and Oisín – for all their help with the fundraiser, especially the social media, driving the safety car and the picnics along the way – thank you”.
